Our CURRENT Project
Peoria Police Department -
RESIDENT OFFICER HOUSE
In early 2018, the Build Peoria board solicited community ideas for its 2018/2019 project. All ideas submitted were thoughtfully considered as to whether they are financially feasible, able to be completed within the designated build window, and can be maintained by a governing body at the completion of the build. Three finalists were selected and Build Peoria members voted to fund the purchase and renovation of a home to donate to the Peoria Police Officer Resident Officer Program. Build Peoria is thrilled to partner with the Peoria Police Department on this noble cause.
After finding success in other municipalities in Illinois, the Resident Officer Program began in Peoria in 2013. Through this partnership with Build Peoria, the Peoria Police Department will add its fifth house to the program. Other Resident Officer homes are located in the East and West Bluffs. The Peoria Police Department intends to find a property in the North Valley neighborhood for the newest residence. The Resident Officer program encourages community policing in the neighborhood in which the officer lives however, an even greater value realized is the resident officers’ development of community programming including jobs partnerships, lawn care and snow removal for the elderly, youth education programs, and social gatherings. In the 5 years of the Resident Officer Program, the Peoria Police Department has experienced an 11.5% reduction in the number of calls for service in the existing neighborhoods that maintain a resident officer.
